Everything you need from tracking to conception – The Mezzo Insemination Kit.
The Mezzo is a complete at-home insemination kit, designed and delivered across South Africa, with everything you need for up to 6 self insemination cycles - from ovulation tracking right through to pregnancy testing. It's the most popular kit in our range: enough supplies to give yourself a real chance over multiple cycles, without the overwhelm of a bulk order.
Created by two women who successfully got pregnant using at-home artificial insemination. This thoughtfully designed kit takes the guesswork (and stress!) out of the process. Whether you’re just starting or already deep into your TTC journey, The Mezzo is here to support you.
With enough supplies for 6 insemination cycles, this kit is the perfect in-between for those wanting more than a starter kit (The Dinky Insemination Kit), without committing to a full bulk box (The Stellar Insemination Kit)
What’s inside:
✓ 6 round-tipped insemination syringes - the core insemination device in the kit, designed for gentle, comfortable self-administration at home
✓ Your choice of 6 disposable Softdiscs or a reusable Origin disc
✓ 6 sterile specimen cups for clean, convenient collection
✓ 30 premium ovulation test strips – because timing is everything
✓ 6 HCG pregnancy test strips to check in after the wait
What about the sperm?" The Mezzo gives you all the tools - the syringes, specimen cups, softdiscs, and test strips but sperm sourcing is a separate step that's very personal to your situation. In South Africa, you can use a known donor (a friend or acquaintance), an anonymous donor through a registered sperm bank, or explore donor communities. Buying or selling sperm is illegal in SA, but donors may be reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses. We have a full guide on Donor Legalities, Contracts, and Donor avenues to explore to help you navigate this step with confidence.
Can I buy this at Clicks or in a store near me? The Mezzo isn't currently available at Clicks, Dischem, or any retail pharmacy and that's intentional. As a specialist at-home insemination kit, it contains medical-grade components that aren't stocked in general retail. Ordering directly from us means you get fresher stock, the right kit for your specific situation, and access to our support team if you have questions along the way. We deliver nationwide across South Africa in 2–3 business days.
A fraction of what a clinic would cost - A single IUI cycle at a South African fertility clinic typically costs R8,000–R20,000. IVF can run R60,000–R150,000 per cycle. The Mezzo gives you 6 complete insemination cycles - including all the tools, ovulation tracking, and pregnancy tests for R850. For many people, home insemination is the right first step before exploring clinical options, and The Mezzo is built to give you the best possible shot over multiple attempts.
Who is The Mezzo for? The Mezzo is used by same-sex couples doing self insemination with a known or anonymous donor, single women building their families independently, and heterosexual couples wanting a private, accessible alternative to clinic-based procedures. If you're looking for a DIY insemination kit that doesn't cut corners on quality, this is it.
Made with real-life experience, The Mezzo is here to empower you with confidence, clarity, and convenience on your terms.

How to Do At-Home Insemination with The Mezzo (Step-by-Step)
The Mezzo Kit is designed to support you through 6 at-home insemination cycles. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you make the most of each item in your kit — all rooted in real-life experience and careful planning.
Track Ovulation with the Included Test Strips
Timing is everything!
Begin testing your LH (Luteinizing Hormone) levels using the included 30 ovulation test strips a few days before you expect to ovulate. For most people, that’s around Day 10 of your cycle if you have a typical 28-day cycle.
How to use:
-
Dip the strip in your urine sample collected in one of the specimen cups.
Let it sit flat for about 5 minutes.
A strong test line (as dark or darker than the control line) means your LH surge is happening — ovulation is likely within 12–36 hours.
Plan to inseminate the same day and again the next day for best results.
💡 Tip: Test twice a day (mid-morning and evening) around your fertile window to catch the surge.
Collect the Semen Sample
When you’re ready to inseminate:
-
Have your donor or partner collect a fresh semen sample into one of the sterile specimen cups.
Let the sample sit at room temperature for 15–30 minutes. This allows the semen to liquefy and makes it easier to draw into the syringe.
Load the Syringe
Using one of the 6 round-tipped syringes (gentle and easy to use):
-
Gently draw up the semen sample. Avoid introducing air bubbles by pulling slowly.
The round tip makes the process smoother and more comfortable for insemination.
Inseminate
Using one of the 6 round-tipped syringes (gentle and easy to use):
-
Find a comfortable, relaxed position (we recommend lying on your back with hips slightly elevated).
Gently insert the syringe and slowly release the semen near the cervix.
After insemination, remain lying down for 15–30 minutes.
Insert the Softdisc or Origin Disc (Optional but Recommended)
To help keep the semen close to the cervix and reduce leakage, you can insert:
-
A disposable Softdisc, or
A reusable Origin disc (if you chose that option)
Insert the disc gently and ensure it’s properly placed behind the pubic bone. It can be worn for several hours post-insemination.
Take It Easy
You’ve done the important part. Try to relax, hydrate, and take care of yourself over the next couple of weeks. No need to remove the disc early — it can be worn comfortably and discreetly.
Test for Pregnancy
About 10–14 days after ovulation, use one of the 6 included HCG pregnancy test strips to check for early pregnancy.
-
Use a first morning urine sample for the most accurate result.
Dip the strip in a specimen cup and wait for 3–5 minutes.
Two lines = potential positive. One line = not yet.
💗 If it’s negative, don’t give up — The Mezzo Kit has enough supplies for more tries!

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between The Mezzo and The Dinky?
The Dinky covers 1–3 cycles and is ideal if you want to try once or ease in gently. The Mezzo covers 6 full cycles and is our most popular kit because it gives you enough attempts to account for timing variation, without the commitment of a bulk order. If you're serious about giving at-home insemination a real chance, The Mezzo is where most people start.
Where can I buy an insemination kit in South Africa?
The Mezzo is available exclusively through our website and ships nationwide across South Africa in 2–3 business days. It's not available at Clicks, Dischem, or any retail pharmacy.
Where do I get sperm for at-home insemination?
Sperm sourcing is separate from the kit itself. In South Africa you can use a known donor, an anonymous donor through a registered sperm bank, or connect with donor communities online. Buying or selling sperm is illegal in SA and donors may only be reimbursed for reasonable expenses. Read our full Donor Guide before you start.
Is at-home insemination the same as IVF?
No, they're very different. IVF involves fertilising eggs outside the body in a clinic, at a cost of R60,000–R150,000+ per cycle in South Africa. At-home insemination (intracervical insemination or ICI) is done privately at home using a syringe to place sperm near the cervix. It's a simpler, significantly more affordable approach that many people try before considering clinical options.
How much does an at-home insemination kit cost in South Africa?
The Mezzo is R850 for 6 complete insemination cycles - all tools, ovulation strips, and pregnancy tests included. If you want to try a single cycle first, The Dinky is R595. Our largest kit, The Stellar, covers 9 cycles.
Can I do this on my own, as a single woman?
Absolutely. The Mezzo is designed for self insemination - you don't need a partner to use it. Many single women and same-sex couples use this kit with a known or anonymous donor. The step-by-step instructions make the whole process manageable alone.
