Designed to keep the good stuff where it counts.

Meet Origin - a reusable fertility disc designed to support home conception after insemination or timed intercourse. Sometimes called a conception disc or conception cup, Origin sits at the base of the cervix after insemination, forming a gentle reservoir that keeps sperm close to where it needs to be for up to 12 hours. Flexible, body-safe, and washable, it's the reusable alternative to disposable soft discs and it doubles as a menstrual disc too. Designed with real TTC journeys in mind and delivered across South Africa.

Why keeping sperm close to the cervix matters - After insemination, gravity and natural movement work against you as semen flows backward and out of the vagina quickly once you stand up or shift position. The Origin disc sits at the base of the cervix like a shallow cup, creating a sealed reservoir that holds the semen in contact with the cervical opening. This gives sperm a longer window to travel through the cervix toward the egg, without the leakage and loss that typically happens within minutes of insemination. It's not a guarantee of conception, nothing is, but it's a simple, evidence-informed step that many people find gives them peace of mind during the two-week wait.

Origin vs a disposable soft disc - how to choose - The disposable Softdisc is single-use, convenient, and a great starting point if you're just beginning your TTC journey or want to try the disc method. Origin is the reusable version that has almost the same shape, same function, same size as a standard disposable disc, but washable and designed to last. If you're planning more than a few cycles, Origin works out significantly more economical. If you'd rather use something fresh each time, disposable discs are the right call. Many people start with disposables and switch to Origin once they're comfortable with insertion.

Origin was developed in partnership with Hapū Helpers - a New Zealand-based brand founded to support home conception journeys. 'Hapū' is a Māori word meaning pregnant, to conceive, and community which is all the things this little disc is designed to help with.

Created with insight from real TTC journeys, Origin is an empowering alternative to disposable discs. It’s washable, reusable, and designed with your comfort and fertility in mind.

Disc dimension/size:

  • Regular – 3 cm x 7 cm (same size as a standard disposable soft disc)

How to Insert and Use Origin - your step-by-step guide

Whether you're using Origin to support insemination or for leak-proof period protection, this step-by-step guide has you covered.

For Post-Insemination Support

jump to menstrual use
1

Complete the Insemination Process

After inserting semen (using a syringe or during intercourse), stay lying down with your hips slightly elevated for 15–30 minutes. This allows sperm to move toward the cervix naturally.

2

Prepare the Disc

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.

Rinse the Origin disc with warm water and mild, unscented soap if it’s not freshly cleaned.

Hold the disc with the open side facing up, and pinch it in half to create a narrow shape for insertion.

3

Insert the Disc

  1. While in a semi-reclined or squatting position, gently insert the pinched disc into the vaginal canal.

Push it back and down toward the tailbone, then tuck the front rim up behind your pubic bone.

It should feel snug and secure — no sharp edges or discomfort.

4

Wear the Disc

  1. You can wear Origin for up to 12 hours.

It’s comfortable to sleep in and discreet enough for daily wear.

Avoid removing it too soon — keeping it in longer helps maintain semen contact near the cervix.

5

Remove the Disc

Wash your hands.

In a squatting position, hook your finger under the front rim and gently pull it out.

Tip: Removing over the toilet can help catch any mess.

Rinse and clean with mild soap or a cup wash. Store in a clean, dry container.

🩸 For Menstrual Use

1

Sterilise Before Every Use

  1. Before your first period use, boil the Origin disc in water for 5 minutes. Let it cool and dry completely.

2

Fold and Insert

  1. Pinch the disc in half and insert it into the vaginal canal, pushing it back and slightly downward.

Tuck the front rim behind your pubic bone.

3

Wear for Up to 12 Hours

  1. Origin can be worn comfortably all day or overnight.

It collects menstrual flow, rather than absorbing it, and is ideal for heavy flow days.

4

Remove, Rinse, and Reuse

  1. Hook your finger under the rim and pull it out gently.

Empty, rinse, and reinsert as needed.

At the end of your cycle, wash thoroughly and boil again before storing.

Helpful Tips

  1. Try inserting in the shower or with one leg raised if you’re new to discs.

If it leaks, it may not be tucked behind the pubic bone — try reinserting.

Origin is not a contraceptive and doesn’t protect against STIs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a conception disc and how does it work?

A conception disc (also called a conception cup or fertility disc) is a flexible, disc-shaped device worn inside the vagina after insemination or intercourse. It sits at the base of the cervix, forming a reservoir that holds sperm close to the cervical opening. This reduces the backward flow of semen and gives sperm a longer window to travel through the cervix toward the egg. Origin can be worn for up to 12 hours after insemination.

What is the difference between a conception disc and a menstrual disc?

They're the same product used for different purposes. Origin is shaped and sized like a standard menstrual disc, the difference is function, not form. During your TTC journey you use it after insemination to retain sperm; during your period you use it to collect menstrual flow. Origin works well for both, which is why it's a popular choice for people cycling between active TTC months and non-conception months.

Is Origin the same as a Softcup or Softdisc?

Origin and Softdisc are the same shape and size, the key difference is that Softdisc is single-use and disposable, while Origin is reusable and washable. If you've used a disposable soft disc before, Origin will feel familiar. If you're new to discs, both are a similar learning curve.

How do I insert a conception disc for the first time?

Pinch the disc in half lengthways to create a narrow shape, then insert it into the vaginal canal pushing back and down toward your tailbone. Tuck the front rim up behind your pubic bone, when it's in correctly it should feel snug with no discomfort. Many people find it easier to insert in the shower or with one leg raised. See the full step-by-step guide above.

Can I use Origin with an IUD?

Yes. Origin is IUD-friendly and safe to use with both hormonal IUDs (like Mirena) and copper IUDs. The disc sits in the vaginal fornix and does not enter or interact with the uterus or IUD placement.

How long do I leave the disc in after insemination?

At least 30 minutes lying down after insemination before inserting the disc, then wear Origin for as long as possible - up to 12 hours. Many people sleep with it in after an evening insemination. The longer the semen stays in contact with the cervix, the better the environment for sperm to travel through.

Can I use Origin for my period as well as for conception?

Yes. Origin doubles as a menstrual disc, it collects flow rather than absorbing it, holds up to 12 hours, and is ideal for heavy days or overnight use. Before using it for your period for the first time, boil it for 5 minutes to sterilise. See the menstrual use section in the How to Use guide above.
