Menstrual discs explained: Choosing the right option for your TTC Journey
When you’re trying to conceive, every small step goes a long way to a successful outcome. After sex or home insemination, taking time to rest can be an important part of the process. Lying down with a cushion placed under your hips gently tilts the pelvis, helping sperm remain in the vagina and closer to the cervix.
Many people on their TTC journey choose to add a menstrual disc at this stage. When inserted after insemination, the disc sits at the base of the cervix. It helps to keep sperm pooled close to where it needs to be, offering added reassurance during those hopeful post-insemination hours. The disc can be worn comfortably overnight, but should not be left in longer than recommended.
What is a menstrual disc?
A menstrual disc is a soft, flexible, ring-shaped device designed to sit high in the vaginal canal, just below the cervix. While it is most commonly used during menstruation, this blog explores how menstrual discs can also be incorporated into a TTC (Trying to Conceive) routine. We’ll walk you through the two different types of discs available, along with the pros and cons of each, to help you make an informed choice that feels right for you.
There are two main types of menstrual discs:
Reusable menstrual discs – made from medical-grade silicone and designed to be cleaned and reused for months or even years.
Disposable menstrual discs – single-use, pre-lubricated discs that are discarded after each use.
Reusable Menstrual Discs
Pros
Cost-effective over time. Although the upfront cost is higher, reusable discs are far more economical when used over several cycles or years.
Eco-friendly - They significantly reduce waste compared to disposable discs and other single-use period products.
Consistent performance - Once you’re comfortable with insertion and removal, you can rely on the same disc cycle after cycle.
Less frequent changes - Reusable discs can often be worn for longer periods, providing convenience and peace of mind.
Note: Some reusable discs are marketed as suitable for intercourse; this is obviously only the case when used for menstruation and not recommended when trying to conceive, as intercourse should allow direct access for sperm to reach the cervix.
Cons
Learning curve - Insertion and removal can take practice, especially at first.
Hygiene responsibility - The disc must be washed after each use, sanitised between cycles, and stored correctly.
Upfront cost - The initial purchase price is higher than buying a pack of disposable discs.
Not ideal for everyone - Some people may find reusable discs uncomfortable or difficult to place, particularly if they are new to internal products.
Disposable Menstrual Discs
Pros
Easy to start with - Ready to use straight from the sterilised, sealed packaging — no cleaning required.
No long-term maintenance - Simply discard after use; no washing or sterilising needed.
Travel-friendly - Ideal for travel, camping, or busy days when access to cleaning facilities is limited.
Great for beginners - Often a simpler option for those who want to avoid maintenance or are new to discs.
Cons
Ongoing cost - Monthly purchases can add up and are generally more expensive long-term.
Environmental impact - Single-use products create more waste and packaging.
Limited supply - You’ll need to remember to stock up, and may run out if unprepared.
Fit and comfort can vary - Comfort may differ between brands, and it can take a few tries to find the right one.
Choosing What’s Right for You
Choose a reusable disc if you:
Prefer a sustainable, low-waste option
Are comfortable cleaning and reusing products
Want to save money in the long term
Choose a disposable disc if you:
Want simplicity with no maintenance
Prefer an option for occasional use or travel
Don’t mind regular purchases
